Theories are already circulating on social media that the entire rebellion was a charade from the start, maybe even staged by Mr. Putin for some convoluted reason. Mr. Prigozhin has waged a long and public feud with Mr. Shoigu over the handling of the Ukraine war and has accused him of giving insufficient support to the Wagner Group. Mr. Prigozhin is the epitome of a post-Soviet villain. Among many other evil deeds, Mr. Prigozhin built the Wagner Group, which first emerged in 2014 during Russia’s invasion of Crimea and has always been closely aligned to Mr. Putin. In his fury, Mr. Prigozhin had his men take control of the southern command center in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, and ordered them to drive north to Moscow on a “march for justice” to meet with military commanders.

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia always seemed to thrive on chaos. For the last few months, as the mercenary chieftain Yevgeny V. Prigozhin escalated his feud with the Russian military, Mr. Putin did not publicly reveal any discomfort with his diatribes. The Russian leader’s key litmus test was loyalty — a fact that Mr. Prigozhin showed he understood, even amid his recent criticism of the military leadership: “I listen to Putin,” he said in May. At no point since being named acting president on Dec. 31, 1999, has Mr. Putin faced such a dramatic challenge. And it comes from a man who — like much of Russia’s elite — owes his power and status to the informal, personalist style of the Russian president.

In the war-torn Chechnya region, Mr. Kadyrov built up a private fiefdom while professing loyalty to no official but Mr. Putin himself. Right-wing extremists have held at least 55 protests targeting LGBTQ people this year, ACLED reported. That is up from just 16 such protests in 2021, an increase of over 340%According to ACLED, a monitoring group, far-right activity is "strongly" linked to violence. Groups such as the Proud Boys conflate the reading of books by members of the LGBTQ community with the predatory "grooming" of kids. Such deadly attacks are often carried out by self-styled vigilantes who are not formally members of any far-right group, Roubadeh Kishi, director of research at ACLED, said in an interview. "It usually ends up being a resurgence of some kind of old narrative, packaged in a new way," Rishi said.
